About Passport Tracking Online in India

Passport tracking in India involves two separate stages — application status tracking (handled by the Ministry of External Affairs through Passport Seva) and Speed Post delivery tracking (handled by India Post after dispatch from the Regional Passport Office).

This page helps you track the Speed Post delivery of your dispatched passport using the PP tracking number received via SMS. For application status including police verification and printing, use the official passportindia.gov.in portal with your file number.

Passports dispatched from RPOs across India use India Post Speed Post with tracking numbers starting with PP — for example PP123456789IN. The physical passport booklet is sent via registered Speed Post with mandatory signature on delivery, ensuring it reaches only the applicant or authorised person.

Delivery typically takes 3–15 working days after dispatch depending on your location. If the postman cannot deliver, a slip is left and the passport is held at your local post office for up to 7 days before being returned to the issuing RPO.

Location Type After Dispatch
Metro City Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata 3–5 days
State Capital Lucknow, Bhopal, Jaipur 4–6 days
District City Varanasi, Nashik, Surat 5–8 days
Small Town Tier-3 cities and semi-urban 7–12 days
Rural / Village Remote areas and villages 10–15 days
Tatkal (All locations) Priority processed passports 2–5 days faster

* Times are from dispatch date. Police verification delays, RPO workload and public holidays may extend total processing time.

Passport Application & Delivery Stages

From application to delivery — what happens at every stage of passport processing in India.

📝
Application Submitted

Your passport application has been submitted at PSK or RPO and is under initial review. You receive a file number for tracking application status.

🔍
Documents Under Verification

Your submitted documents are being verified by the passport office. Any discrepancy can cause a temporary hold.

👮
Police Verification Initiated

Local police have been sent a request to verify your address and background. For tatkal applications, verification may happen after dispatch. Normal passport verification typically takes 3–7 working days.

Police Verification Completed

Background check cleared. Your application now moves to the printing stage. If verification is adverse, the application may be rejected or held for review.

🖨️
Passport Printed

Your passport booklet has been printed at the passport printing facility. It is being quality-checked before dispatch.

📦

Common Passport Delivery Problems & Solutions

What to do when passport delivery fails or tracking shows unexpected status.

📍Tracking Not Updating After Dispatch

After dispatch from RPO, tracking may show no movement for 2–3 days while the passport is processed at the central sorting hub.

What to do:

  • Wait 48–72 hours after receiving the dispatch SMS
  • Check again in the morning after overnight sorting scans
  • Verify the PP number from your dispatch SMS carefully
  • Call India Post helpline 1800-266-6868 if no update after 5 days

🚪Delivery Attempted but Not at Home

Passport delivery requires a mandatory signature. If you were absent, the postman leaves a slip and returns the passport to your local post office.

What to do:

  • Check your door/letterbox for a delivery attempt slip
  • Visit the post office within 7 days with original ID proof
  • Take the PP tracking number and delivery slip with you
  • Some post offices allow authorised representatives with a letter

📦Passport Returned to RPO

If uncollected from post office within 7 days or repeated delivery failures occur, the passport is returned to the issuing RPO.

What to do:

  • Contact your RPO immediately with your file number
  • Request re-dispatch — a small fee may apply
  • Ensure someone is home or a representative is available
  • Update your address if it was incorrect on the application

📵Passport Shows Delivered but Not Received

In rare cases, the tracking shows Delivered but you did not receive it. This usually happens when handed to a family member or building security.

What to do:

  • Check with all family members and building security
  • Visit your local delivery post office with ID proof within 3 days
  • They can check the physical delivery record and signature
  • File a complaint at Passport Seva helpline: 1800-258-1800

Passport Tracking — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about passport delivery tracking, Speed Post status, police verification and passport application.

After your passport is dispatched from the Regional Passport Office, you receive a 13-digit Speed Post tracking number starting with PP (e.g. PP123456789IN) via SMS on your registered mobile number. Enter that number in the tracking box above to get real-time delivery status, transit location and estimated delivery date.

PP is the India Post Speed Post prefix used specifically for passport deliveries dispatched from Regional Passport Offices. A PP tracking number is 13 characters long, starts with PP and ends with IN — for example PP123456789IN. You receive it via SMS after dispatch.

Visit passportindia.gov.in and click Track Application Status. Enter your file number and date of birth to check current application stage — whether it is under verification, approved, printed or dispatched. This is different from Speed Post delivery tracking done on this page.

After dispatch from RPO, passport delivery takes 3–5 working days for metro cities, 5–8 days for district cities and 10–15 days for rural areas via India Post Speed Post. Tatkal passports are processed faster but delivery time after dispatch is the same.

Tatkal passport is processed in 1–3 working days with deferred (post-dispatch) police verification and costs ₹3,500 for fresh application. Normal passport takes 7–14 working days with pre-dispatch police verification and costs ₹1,500. Both are dispatched via India Post Speed Post after processing.

If the postman could not deliver your passport, they leave a delivery attempt slip and return the passport to your local post office. Visit the post office within 7 days with original ID proof and the PP tracking number. If uncollected in 7 days, the passport is returned to the issuing RPO.

Contact your issuing Regional Passport Office immediately with your file number. You may need to request re-dispatch by paying a small re-dispatch fee. Ensure your address and contact details are correct and someone is available for the next delivery attempt.

Passport Seva helpline: 1800-258-1800 (toll-free, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 10 PM; Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM). For India Post delivery issues, call 1800-266-6868 (Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM).
